How to rank in ChatGPTas a local business
People now ask ChatGPT “which dentist near me can see me this week?” Here is where its answer comes from, what you can change, and what nobody can sell you.
Updated October 2026. Written by the Rank On Maps AI team.

Asked on ChatGPT, from London
Which dentist in Clapham can fit in a check-up this week?“Two practices that come up often are Northcote Dental Studio and Abbeville Family Dentistry, both with recent reviews mentioning short waits for check-ups.”

There is no ranking to climb. There is an answer to be part of.
On Google Maps you have a position: third for “dentist” on your street, eleventh two miles away. ChatGPT does not work like that. It writes a fresh answer every time, names a handful of places, and the next person who types the same question may get a different handful.
So “ranking in ChatGPT” really means one thing: being among the businesses it can find, trust and describe when someone nearby asks for your trade. That depends on what it can read about you on the open web, and most of it you can tidy yourself.
If you want to know where you stand before reading on, put your customers’ questions to ChatGPT and Gemini in about a minute and see who they name.
How ChatGPT picks a local business. What OpenAI actually says.
OpenAI publishes how ChatGPT search gathers information, not how it weighs it. These four facts come from its own help pages.
It searches the web through partners
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, rewriting your question into shorter queries it sends them. Its help page points to Microsoft’s privacy statement, the company behind Bing, so what Bing knows about you matters.
It has its own crawler
OpenAI runs OAI-SearchBot to find websites for ChatGPT’s search features. A site that blocks it in robots.txt is left out of ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a plain navigational link.
It knows roughly where the person asking is
ChatGPT estimates a general location from the IP address and may pass it to search providers, so “dentist near me” in Clapham and in Croydon are different questions. On phones an answer can come with a map, and OpenAI says trusted third parties supply listings of nearby businesses.
It cites where its answer came from
Answers built on web search can carry citations: links to the pages ChatGPT leaned on. Those sources tell you which sites it trusts in your area, and which of them say nothing about you.
What OpenAI does not publish
OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors meant to surface relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed. It does not list those factors. Anyone who claims to know the formula is guessing, or selling.
What you can influence.Six things, most of them an afternoon’s work.
None of these is a trick. Each makes you easier to find and to describe, for ChatGPT and everywhere else a customer looks.
- 1
Use one name, one address, one phone number everywhere
If your website says “Northcote Dental”, your Google profile says “Northcote Dental Studio Ltd” and an old directory still lists the phone number you gave up in 2021, a search engine has three businesses where you have one. Pick the version on your sign and use it word for word everywhere.
Google’s guidelines ask for the name you use consistently on your storefront, website and stationery; that is also what lets an assistant match a mention back to you.
- 2
Claim your Bing Places listing
With Microsoft among the search providers behind ChatGPT search, your Bing listing is no longer the forgotten one. Bing Places can import your Google Business Profile, keep it in sync weekly, every two weeks or monthly, and verifies the import automatically when your Google profile is already verified.
Bing says publishing usually takes 7 to 12 days. Afterwards, check every field by hand: an import copies mistakes as faithfully as facts, and Bing’s categories do not match Google’s one for one.
- 3
Make your Google profile complete, and keep the reviews coming
Your Google profile feeds Bing Places, Google’s own AI answers and Gemini, and it is the record most directories copy. Category, every service, hours, area served, photos and a plain description belong on it. Reviews that describe the actual work (“fitted me in the same week”, “explained the cost first”) tell any reader what you are known for.
For the full checklist, see Google Business Profile optimization, step by step.
Rank Pilot: it audits the profile every month, fills the gaps you approve and drafts a reply to every new review. You save each change.
- 4
Give your website a page that says what you do and where
ChatGPT can only cite a page that exists. A home page with a slogan and a booking button gives it nothing to quote. Write one plain page per main service (“emergency dental appointments in Clapham”), list the areas you cover, and put the same name, address and phone number in the footer.
Add hours, prices where you can state them, and who the service is for. Write for the person asking, not for a keyword list.
Rank Pilot: does not edit your website. Its audit tells you which details on the site disagree with your profile and what to add; the change stays with you or your web person.
- 5
Be mentioned where your town already looks
Look at the citations in ChatGPT’s answers for your trade and city. They tend to be local news sites, trade associations, chambers of commerce, well-known directories and “best of” roundups. Being listed there accurately, with the same details as everywhere else, is worth more than a hundred obscure directories.
Earn it the ordinary way: join the association you qualify for, sponsor the school fair, then check your entry is correct.
- 6
Let OpenAI’s crawler in
Ask whoever runs your website to check robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI recommends allowing it, says a change takes about a day to register, and also asks that your host or CDN does not block its published IP addresses.
Blocking GPTBot, OpenAI’s training crawler, is a separate choice: OpenAI says it controls whether your pages may train its models, not whether ChatGPT search shows you.
What does not work. However confidently it is sold.
Four offers land in owners’ inboxes every week. None of them is backed by anything OpenAI has published.
An llms.txt file as the magic switch
llms.txt is a proposed convention, not a standard ChatGPT is documented to read. OpenAI’s search help asks only that OAI-SearchBot can reach your site, and Google says outright that its AI features need no special AI text files. Having one does no harm; it does not put you in an answer.
Bought mentions and planted reviews
Paid placements on link farms, fake “top ten dentists” lists and bought reviews are the usual pitch. Fake reviews break Google’s policy and, in the US and the UK, the law; a list nobody reads is not the kind of source an assistant learns to trust.
“Guaranteed AI SEO”
OpenAI itself says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed, and answers change from one run to the next. A contract that promises you will be “the first answer in ChatGPT” is promising something its seller does not control.
Keywords stuffed into your business name
Renaming “Northcote Dental” to “Northcote Dental Best Emergency Dentist Clapham” breaks Google’s guidelines, risks a suspended profile and makes your name disagree with your website.
How to check whether ChatGPT names you
Ten minutes, once a month. The point is to ask the way a customer would, not the way an owner would.
Ask the questions a new customer types, not your business name: “a dentist in Clapham who sees nervous patients”, “emergency dentist open Saturday near SW4”. Asking for your own name only proves ChatGPT can find you when someone already knows you.
Ask from your town, or put the town in the question. ChatGPT estimates location from the connection, so a check made on holiday or through a VPN answers for the wrong place. Ask each question two or three times: the list changes between runs, and one answer proves little.
Open the cited sources. If a competitor is named and a local directory is the citation, that directory is your next job. If you are named but described wrongly, the mistake usually sits on your own site.
To save the typing, our AI visibility checker puts your customers’ questions to ChatGPT and Gemini and shows who they named and which sites they cited.
Google Maps now has an assistant of its own, with its own logic: how Ask Maps picks the places it names is a separate read.
Where Rank Pilot fits. And where it stops.
Rank Pilot is the agent behind Rank On Maps AI. Here is its share of the work above, stated exactly.
- Every month it puts the questions your customers type to ChatGPT, Gemini, Google’s AI answers and Ask Maps, and shows you whether each one named you.
- It works on your Google profile: categories, services, description and a weekly post, each saved by you.
- It drafts a reply to every new Google review in your voice; with Autopilot on, a saved reply goes out two hours later.
- It checks your Maps rank every week from 25 points across your area.
The product side is on AI search visibility for local businesses.
What Rank Pilot does not do
It does not edit your website, does not touch directories or Bing Places, and buys no mentions. For those it only tells you what to change. It makes no forecast of what any assistant will say next month, because nobody can.
Straight answers
Ranking in ChatGPT, answered. What owners actually ask us.
Does ChatGPT use Google Maps to find local businesses?
OpenAI does not say it does. Its help pages say ChatGPT search works with third-party search providers and links Microsoft’s privacy statement, and that trusted third parties supply nearby business listings. Your Google profile still matters, because Bing Places can import it and many other sites copy it.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Nobody can give you a date. OpenAI says a robots.txt change registers in about a day and Bing says a new listing takes 7 to 12 days to publish, but whether an answer then names you depends on factors OpenAI does not publish.
Can I pay OpenAI to be recommended?
There is no paid placement for local businesses in ChatGPT’s answers that OpenAI documents, and its help page says placement is not guaranteed. Be wary of anyone who sells one.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. It does no harm, but OpenAI documents no role for it in ChatGPT search. What OpenAI asks for is a site its OAI-SearchBot crawler can reach.
Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?
Look at the sources it cites under that answer. Usually the competitor is described plainly on a page ChatGPT trusts, a directory, a local article or its own service page, and you are not. Fix that page first.
Does ranking on Google Maps help me in ChatGPT?
Indirectly. The same work (a complete profile, consistent details, reviews that describe the job) feeds the sources ChatGPT reads, and it moves you on Maps too. A high Maps rank alone does not put you in a ChatGPT answer.
