Why emergency trades are different
You cannot climb the map during a cold snap.
Heating and plumbing demand arrives in spikes: the first hard freeze, the Sunday a pipe lets go. A homeowner standing in water types “emergency plumber near me” and rings one of the top three.
Rank moves over weeks. A cold snap lasts a weekend. Whatever position you hold when it starts is the one you earned in the quiet months.
Position is not the only thing settled in advance. Your vans go to the customer, so no door decides your reach. Two settings do: whether the address is hidden, and which areas you serve.
Both sit in the same forgotten form as the category, the hours and the list of work you take. Nothing flags them when they are wrong.
Found in week one
Home address showing on a service-area listing
Hiding it, with areas served, drafted
Service area still the radius picked at signup
The towns the vans cover drafted instead
Primary category was General Contractor
The one homeowners search drafted
Hours read 9 to 5 on a 24-hour callout line
24-hour hours drafted for you to confirm
Boiler service and backflow testing not listed
Drafted, with the rest of the job list
No post on the profile since spring
A post drafted for this week
What the scan turns up on your own profile decides your list.
Meet the agent
Rank Pilot works the quiet season for you.
Rank Pilot is the AI agent that does the quiet-season work for you: a full audit of the profile every month, drafts of what it lacks, and an email every Monday with what moved. Nothing goes out until you save it, from the van if you like, and none of it stops when every line is ringing.
What it does
While the vans are out, these six keep running.
All six run against the whole patch your vans cover, not just the registered yard.
- 1
Measures your rank across the whole service area
From 25 points, not one. A shop can sit first at its own yard and be nowhere in the suburb its vans cross daily.
- 2
Checks how far your listing actually reaches
Whether your address should be hidden, and whether the areas you serve match where you actually go. Drafted for you to save.
- 3
Lists every job you take
Drain clearing, water heater swaps, AC installs, boiler service, gas leaks, backflow testing, drafted for your list. Each one missing is a search you cannot turn up in.
- 4
Checks what ChatGPT and Gemini say
Every month: whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers name you when someone asks for a plumber nearby.
- 5
Answers the callout-fee review
Reviews are pulled every four hours, and the draft says what the fee covered. Saved from the van, it goes out two hours later with Autopilot on.
- 6
Tells you each Monday where you slipped, and who moved
Rank moves week to week and nobody watches it in July. The Monday email names the shop that moved.
The HVAC and plumbing rank check shows where you rank across the service area and who holds the top three. Rank Pilot then drafts replies to plumbing and HVAC reviews and tracks the companies ahead of you, so you can outrank the contractors nearby.
What actually happens, and when
Week one you see the profile change. Month three you see the map change.
Nobody looks for a heating engineer until the boiler stops, so profile work done in a quiet month is already in place when the cold arrives. Google takes weeks to register it, and the weekly scan shows the progress.
- Week one
Address visibility, service areas, every job you take and the hours, drafted for you to save. A reply drafted for every new review.
All of it visible on your own profile. You can check every item yourself.
- Month three
Where rankings usually start moving, which is why starting in a quiet stretch matters more here than most.
Usually. Not always, and never guaranteed by us.
What changes before the next spike.
Your work once the van is on the drive is not the problem. Getting seen first is.
Doing it yourself
- Ranking gets a thought in the middle of a cold snap, by which point that season is already spent.
- A new outfit two towns over takes the top three, and you hear about it from a quiet phone.
- Nobody posts. The profile looks the same in October as it did in April.
- The one-star about a callout fee is the first thing the next homeowner reads, with nothing under it.
With Rank Pilot
- The work runs all year, so the position is already there when the weather turns.
- The Monday email names the company that moved, with its rating and review count.
- A post drafted every week, out once you save it.
- Your answer is drafted and waiting on your phone, saying plainly what the fee covered.
Rank Pilot never writes, buys or incentivises a review, not even for the drain you cleared at midnight.
$79 a month per company, whatever the weather. A 7-day trial, no card, no contract.
Straight answers
HVAC and plumber SEO: the questions owners ask.
We take calls at 2am. Does the profile need to say that?
It does. Plenty of emergency businesses list 9 to 5 because that is when the office is staffed. At 11pm the profile reads Closed, while the homeowner filters Maps for what is open now.
I run the business from my house. Should the address be public?
If customers never come to you, no. Google’s own guidance for service-area businesses is to hide the address and set the areas you serve instead. We check it in the first week and tell you what we found.
Can I just set my service area to 50 miles and cover everything?
You can, and it will not do what you are hoping. A bigger radius does not make you rank across it. Google still weighs how close and how relevant you are to each individual search. Set it to where your vans actually go.
We are flat out right now. Is this the wrong time to start?
It is the wrong time to expect a result and a fine time to start. The first month is profile work. The ranking itself usually takes 30 to 90 days, so you are choosing which season it is finished for.
Does Google’s Ask Maps recommend plumbers and HVAC companies?
It can, from what Maps knows about a company, including the services and hours on its profile and its reviews; read how Ask Maps picks a business. Rank Pilot checks every month whether Ask Maps names your company.
