What you would be hiring

What a local SEO agency does. Most of it is weekly upkeep.

A local SEO company sells a mix of setup, upkeep and advice. It helps to separate the three before comparing prices.

Setup is the first month: auditing the Google Business Profile, correcting categories and services, fixing the name, address and phone number across directories, and sometimes reworking the website’s location pages. It is real work, and it is mostly done once.

Upkeep is everything after: replying to reviews, posting, keeping hours and services current, checking rankings and watching competitors. It never ends, and it is where most of a monthly retainer goes. Advice is the account manager, the strategy call and the report that explains the month.

So when two quotes differ by thousands a year, ask how the hours split between those three. A retainer that is mostly upkeep is paying people to repeat the same checklist every week; one that is mostly advice should come with someone who knows your market and your trade, not only your login.

Upkeep on a profile follows the same pattern every week, which is why software can do it. Before you sign or renew anything, see where you rank on Google Maps today, from 25 points across your city, so you know what you are paying to change.

What it costs.Side by side.

Agency figures are public list prices for local SEO retainers. Rank Pilot is one plan, the same for every business.

A local SEO agency

$1,500–5,000 a month, usually a 6–12 month contract

  • Setup and upkeep bundled into one retainer, billed every month.
  • A minimum term before you can leave, whatever the results.
  • The month’s work summarised in a report after it has happened.

Job by job. What each one actually does.

True on both sides, including the jobs Rank Pilot does not do. If you would rather do all of it yourself, the step-by-step profile optimization guide covers every field.

  • Fixing the profile

Agency: Audits the profile and corrects it, usually in the first month.

Rank Pilot: Rebuilds the profile, then keeps it current; you save each change.

  • Review replies

Agency: Included on some plans, an add-on on others.

Rank Pilot: A reply drafted in your voice for each new review. You save it; with Autopilot on, it is sent two hours after that.

  • Posts

Agency: A few a month on most retainers.

Rank Pilot: Drafts one post every Monday; it is published after you save it.

  • Rank tracking

Agency: Varies; often one figure in the monthly report.

Rank Pilot: Checks your rank every week from 25 points across your city.

  • Competitors

Agency: Discussed on the strategy call.

Rank Pilot: Tracks nearby rivals’ rank, rating, review count, photos and primary category, and shows what changed.

  • AI answers

    Agency: Rarely included yet.

Rank Pilot: Checks every month whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers recommend you.

  • Your website

Agency: Often writes location pages and fixes technical SEO.

Rank Pilot: Does not touch your website.

  • Links and directory listings

Agency: Builds citations and outreach links on many plans.

Rank Pilot: Does not build links or citations.

  • Reporting

Agency: A monthly report, sometimes a call to go through it.

Rank Pilot: An email every Monday with what changed, and a full audit in the app every month.

  • A person to talk to

Agency: An account manager, with a name and a phone number.

Rank Pilot: No account manager. The app shows the work, and our team answers by email.

What a month looks like. The same rhythm every month.

An agency’s month is a retainer and a report. Rank Pilot’s month is a set of jobs on a fixed schedule, so you always know what is due next.

Rank Pilot’s schedule
  1. 1The first weekAn audit of the whole profile and a first rank grid from 25 points. What the audit finds arrives in your app as drafts to save.
  2. 2Each new reviewA reply drafted in your voice. You save it, and Autopilot sends it two hours later unless you switch Autopilot off.
  3. 3Every MondayA post drafted for the week, a fresh rank check, and an email with what changed for you and for your competitors.
  4. 4Every monthA full audit in the app, and a check of whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI answers recommend you.

You see every action. Before it happens, not after.

The usual complaint about agencies is not the price. It is not knowing what was done for it.

With Rank Pilot the work happens in the open. Each change to the profile, each reply and each post is a draft in your app until you save it. The rank grid shows the same 25 points every week, so last month and this month can be compared without anyone explaining the numbers to you.

  • Every profile change listed, with what it was and what it becomes
  • Every reply draft under the review it answers
  • The week’s rank on the same 25 points as last week
  • No contract, so the only reason to stay is that it works

What “AI SEO agency” should mean. And what it should not.

Plenty of agencies now say AI. The useful question is what the AI does and who checks it.

In Rank Pilot, the AI drafts: the reply in your voice, the weekly post, the corrected description, the fixes the audit finds. It measures: rank from 25 points, competitors, and whether AI assistants recommend you. It does not decide alone what appears under your name. You save the drafts, and reviews you have saved go out through Autopilot, which you can switch off.

Be wary of any AI SEO company that promises a position, a number of calls or a ranking date. Nobody controls Google’s results, and a promise like that is a sales line. Ask instead what it changes, how often, and where you can see it.

That also means the AI is not a substitute for judgement you do not have time to apply. If a draft reply is wrong about a refund you never offered, or a post mentions a service you dropped, you change it before saving. The software takes the repetition off your week; the decisions stay yours.

When a good agency is worth keeping.

Rank Pilot replaces the weekly profile work. Some businesses need more than that, and should pay for it.

  • You need a new website, or serious technical work on the one you have.
  • You run paid ads and want one team to manage spend and landing pages.
  • You have many locations, a brand team, and reporting to a head office.
  • Your market is competitive enough that links and press coverage decide it.
  • You want a person to plan with every month and are happy to pay for their time.

In those cases the two can work together: the agency on the website, links and ads, Rank Pilot on the weekly profile upkeep, which takes it off the agency’s invoice. If you are deciding whether your current retainer is earning its fee, start with the questions that show whether your agency is doing the work.

Local SEO agencies, answered. Before you sign anything.

  • How much does a local SEO agency cost?

Public list prices for local SEO retainers run from about $1,500 to $5,000 a month, usually with a contract of 6 to 12 months (checked July 2026). Rank Pilot is $79 a month with no contract.

  • What does a local SEO company actually do?

Setup in the first month, then weekly upkeep of your Google Business Profile: review replies, posts, hours and services, rank checks and competitor watching. Many also work on the website, links and directory listings, and provide an account manager.

  • Can Rank Pilot replace my local SEO agency?

It can replace the weekly Google Business Profile work. It does not build websites, links or directory listings, and it has no account manager. If those are what you pay your agency for, keep that part.

  • Is an AI SEO agency worth it?

It is worth it when you can see what the AI does before anything goes live. Rank Pilot shows each draft in the app before it reaches your profile and measures the result weekly from 25 points. Nobody, human or AI, can promise a ranking.

  • Is there a contract?

No. Rank Pilot is $79 a month after a 7-day trial, and you cancel from your account whenever you choose, without a phone call.

  • Can I use Rank Pilot and an agency together?

Yes. A common split is the agency on the website, links and ads, and Rank Pilot on the profile, reviews and weekly posts. It also gives you an independent weekly rank check on what the agency reports.

  • What should a local SEO company report every month?

What it changed on your profile, with dates, and how your rank moved on the same searches from the same points as last month. Impressions and reach alone are not enough, because they can rise while calls stay flat.
